There are a few things that people tend to overlook when thinking about hygiene. Sadly, this is not being taught in schools; not even by our parents. For example, even when I took personal health care class at school, I learnt these things over time with experience and with logic. One of those things I sadly learnt in my middle 20's, was that sugar causes bad breath so, I decreased sugar consumption and developed a better oral hygiene.
This post contains everything I would had love to hear when I was a teenager and nobody taught me.
Things I do to complement my hygiene routine that nobody talks about or at least enough, so very young people can avoid hygiene mistakes.
Fresh and Clean BedSheets
![]() |
| Can you smell the crispy clean aroma? It is not downy; it is a crispy clean aroma because they are clean. Not drowned in artificial smells that make your nose hurt. |
Do you take a good bath before going to bed? How much do you sweat at night? Do you sleep naked? If you allow yourself to go to a dirty bed, the smell will stick to your skin and hair. It does not matter if you take a morning bath, keep your bed sheets fresh and clean.
I do it every weekend (or when needed) with my DIY laundry detergent mixture.
Also, be aware that we tend to put objects in our beds; it is inevitable. So, remember that you are bringing bacteria from the outside world (transient flora) to your home. This will not only result in bad odor bacteria transferring to your hair/skin but in your room smelling like a dumpster.
For example: Me and my laptop
Allow your Mattress to Breathe
Place a fan in front of it and open your room windows. If you have help or the strength, place your mattress in your back yard to allow the sun to disinfect. I would love to do this but for now, I live in a apartment.
Clean Pillows
This can be done every year or every 6 months. I must say that I rather buy new ones because every time I wash my pillows, they lose their shape and it does not feels the same. Pillows absorb sweat, saliva and hair.
Changing my Bath Towel Every 3 Days
This is even more important than your bed sheets because you are drying your skin after getting clean so, if the towel stinks, you will stink. You are also increasing the chance of infection. I know we get out of the bathroom clean (assuming you clean yourself well) but is the humidity that creates bad odor bacteria and in more serious cases, mold.
Also, do not dry your genitals or your anus with your main towel.
Instead:
Have small towels available.
Use bathroom paper.
How to Have Fresh & Clean Genitals and Anus
This is very intimate; if you are sensitive please skip this part. We are adults in here and if you are looking for this info, then you are mature enough to handle this as what it is; information to improve your hygiene. Ok?
Use and unscented, organic or gentle wash. Preferably baby wash. For the butt area, I use Pure Castile Soap Peppermint. Avoid the inside of the vagina and the anus just in case. I take a little amount, create foam and wash my complete butt area even inside but NOT inside the anus. This can cause serious irritation and other complications.
If you decide to clean inside your anus I would recommend using baby wipes prior to shower and then with a little bit of baby wash cleaning around (but not inside) so any residue can be washed off. Keep cleaning the inside with water first and then around apply a little bit of baby wash. It will be clean, I promise. I have been doing this and the difference is noticeable.
Stand in front of your fan; this feels so good. Open your butt, and let the air flow. You will feel the freshness in another level. Nobody will tell you this, I learnt this because one day I was like "uh, what if..." and I did it.
Clothing
I know not everybody is able to buy big brand laundry detergent. But still, there are some tricks that work to clean your clothes and to get rid of odors. For example, you can apply baking soda which price is super cheap.
Underwear
I wash them all with a hypoallergenic laundry detergent.
Apply Body Lotion & Perfume/Body Splash
As soon as your body is dry enough apply your favorite body lotion, apply your fragrance and seal it with body oil. Your skin will feel and look hydrated, younger, smooth and you will smell good. Which is the main goal.
Remember: a good soap (a good shower routine) is better than expensive perfume.
Clean your ears; the back accumulates dirt. Also, clean your jewelry often.
Cleaning the Washing Machine
Your washing machine have a cycle called "Clean Washer" and if you have never used it before your clothes aren't getting that clean. Your clothes are absorbing old residues that are responsible for many skin issues and unpleasant odors.
I clean mine with a little bit of clorox and regular soap specially when done washing my floor carpets.
Cleaning my hands with soap after eating or touching any food
I clean my hands with soap after eating or after touching foods that can leave smells or grease. This to avoid transferring smells around my body (hair, face, clothing, etc.).
Hand Bag/BackPack Cleaning
Use a gentle cleaner or baby wipes. Super easy and fast. Open it in any open space so it can breathe and also to allow the sun to disinfect. Apply your fave perfume and you will be set for your next trip.
Our hand bags/back packs are essential parts of our outfits and believe me, if it stinks, people will notice. Micro odors are not undetectable. Also, whenever you detect a funny odor, it can change your mood and your face. You don't want people wondering if you feel comfortable; it can ruin your vibe.
Fresh and Clean Car
Please create the habit of keeping the inside of your car clean and smelling fresh. Go to the gas station for a vacuum and clean your car with Lysol wipes or even with baby wipes and alcohol. Spray a nice perfume, febreze or get some pines. If possible, save money to shampoo it at least once in a year or every 2 years. Specially if your seats are made of fabric. I did it and the difference is huge. The feeling of clean is on another level.
Are you ready to update or to keep up with your hygiene routine? When you smell good, the world is yours.
Keep Moving Forward,
